January 29th: Obey God

Today on my Bible Reading Plan I read Exodus 23&24, Psalm 14 and Acts 5.  My verse this morning was

Acts 5:29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!

Here it is in it’s context:

Acts 5:25-29 (NIV)

25 Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” 26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them.
27 The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. 28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”
29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!
O: Observation

The disciples have already been in prison once, however, an Angel released them. After the prison guards and Pharisees and saducees realized they were out and preaching the gospel, they were angry. Here, you see the response of Peter. They were told NOT to preach about Jesus, but Peter reminds them, they are to follow the commands of God, even if it is against man.

A: Application

How often is society pushing us to accept the World view on unbiblical issues? We need to obey God and respond lovingly.

P: Prayer

Lord,

Thank you for reminding me that Your values are the only values that matter. Help me to have the courage to follow you even when the world hates it. Help me to love even when I disagree. Help me to put You first.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen

  1. I love your prayer here.

“Help me to have the courage to follow you even when the world hates it.”

I have noticed a shift that has happened. It is getting harder to be a Christian to the point where people… well close family…hate what we believe and want to verbalize it. People who never seemed to be bothered with it before now ready to attack your faith out of the blue . “The world” can include our very own loved ones and sadly it creates distance because we won’t renounce our faith. I am sure that this has been a problem that has been around for a long time….but it’s just now hitting close to home for me. I am just looking to the Lord to strengthen and guide me through it. But it was a beautiful, heartfelt prayer!
